(More customer reviews)It was really easy to put together and use. It was well packed - it emerged unscathed from a very scathed box. The steel seems thin until you relaize that it is just carrying bikes, not a trailor. It is strong enough and doesn't weigh a ton.
However... It comes in three main pieces that you bolt together. The resulting rack does exactly what it is supposed to. And it is solid. That's almost enough. The problem is that a thief must remove, at most, two bolts to steal your bikes. I used some Locktite on the bolts and cured that little failing. Now the bolts can't come out and the rack is about perfect.

(More customer reviews)This rack fit perfectly on my '95 Wrangler's hitch. I like having the option of carrying camping gear when the safari top is on and don't want to hassle with a overhead rack. Fits my two five gallon military jerry cans on each end and has plenty of room left for a giant Coleman cooler and other gear. Takes two to put it together easily, but it was less than $100.
My suggestion: a stabilizing set screw that helps keep it from rocking (ever so slightly) from left to right. It is not very noticeable, but knowing that it does move weighs on my mind when off-roading.

(More customer reviews)The 9200 is an inferior version of the 520. I ordered the $169 HR9200 first and was dissapointed with the amount of sway, the lack of ability to use a locking mechanism to affix it to the car and the lack of straps that come with it.
I sent the 9200 back and am quite happy even though I had to eat the $25 return mail fee. It is definitely more heavy duty..I think it weighs 15-20 pounds more than the 9200. The anti-sway of the 9200 just didn't cut the mustard.

Allen Deluxe 5-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) Review

(More customer reviews)UPDATE as of June 12, 2009: I've only twice used this bike rack to tote 5 bikes on a trip. I just don't have confidence in the physical build of this design, and it's not worth the mental anguish wondering whether I'll kill someone because the bike rack broke while transporting 5 bikes at 65 mph. It's sitting in my garage now, where it's been the last year.

I researched Amazon to find a bike rack that could transport 5 bikes. I chose this one mainly on the strength of the generally favorable reviews and because it was priced considerably lower than other products.
In short, the bike rack did what it said it would do, but I'd prefer a few design changes.
Firstly, the rack, after installing it into the hitch, tends to sag to the ground rather than protruding straight out of the hitch. On our Dodge Grand Caravan minivan, this posed a problem: when fully loaded, the trailer hitch was FOUR INCHES from the ground! If we were going to travel over sizeable speed bumps or travel over roads with sizeable gradient changes, the hitch was going to scrap the ground! In fact, backing out of the driveway caused the hitch to scrape the ground, and I had to physically lift the hitch up as my wife slowly backed out of the driveway! On vehicles where the hitch is 18 inches off the ground, this isn't going to by your concern, but if you're driving a minivan or other vehicle where the hitch is only 8 inches or so off the ground, then this IS a concern.
The "no-wobble" bolt that affixes the bike rack to the hitch actually bowed the part of the bike rack that slides into the hitch inward due to the pressure. You could argue, I suppose, that I overtightened the bolt. I would argue that my puny arms shouldn't cause the bike rack to bow at all -- there should be enough steel in the rack to keep that from happening.
I didn't have a problem getting the 5 bikes installed, but it takes some time and effort to arrange the bikes in a way that they all fit. Be aware, though, that our taillights were very badly obscured by all the bikes. In the future, I think I would like to add some trailer lights to the last bike on the rack to make brake lights easier to see.
While traveling down the interstate, I can tell you I had an uncomfortable feeling watching the bike rack bump up and down each time I went over a bridge. I felt like at anytime, the physical structure would break and I'd have 5 bikes flying across the interstate road.
In short, this bike rack did do what it said it would do, but I didn't have peace that this solution was one I would want to use repeatedly in the future. I'll keep my eye out on a small trailer on which I might be able to tow our bikes.

Why I rated it a 3 out of 5 is that it comes with a bolt that needs to be tightened in the vehicle hitch.
One can't just use the usual clip that we all use for connecting trailers, etc to our trailer hitch.
That means that if you wish to use this hitch mount T on a van or suv it's a pain and time consuming to get into the back of your van or suv.

SportRack A30902 4EZ Hitch Platform 4 Bike Rack Review

(More customer reviews)Pros: this rack carries 4 bikes without any of them touching, and they are supported exactly the way they are designed to be supported. The carrier appears indestructible. If you have a lift back, the hatch can be opened when the carrier is mounted (but not when the bikes are on the rack). Any size or shape bike can be carried. When driving, the bikes are secure and silent.
Cons: weight -- the disadvantage to indestructibility is that a lot of steel was used to build the rack, and that makes it heavy (about 60 lbs without bikes). This weight only comes into play when putting the carrier on your car, or taking it off. loading -- If you have a lift-back, you need to get into it before the bikes are loaded. The upright bars can be tilted away from the back of the car far enough to open the back. length -- you have to remember that this carrier is sticking out a few feet behind your car. Storage -- even folded up it takes a lot of room in your garage.
We need to carry several bikes at a time: road, hybrid and "step-through" (ladies) -- and sometimes a mountain bike.
The wheels fit in lower channels, which may be adjusted for wheel length and to avoid interfering with the next bike's pedals. Then the "hold down" hook keeps the bike firmly in the channels, and the hooks are well padded. You can leave your frame pump on the bike if you want (although a rough road may vibrate it off if it's not secured). Finally, Velcro straps across the tires ... well, I'm not sure what these are for, but we use them. Once on, the bikes don't sway or bounce relative to the car, and any shocks are delivered through the tires -- where the bikes are meant to receive shocks.
A 2 inch receiver will allow for 350lbs -- or more -- of tongue weight. A 60 lb rack and 4 40 lb bikes will only be 220 lbs, well within the limits of the receiver. If you've got the hitch, you can handle the weight.
The assembly is not straightforward: it took me about an hour, and I had leftover pieces. After it was assembled I realized that I mounted the "hold-down" bars in reverse (the long one has to be in before the short one). Assembly is a one-time event, and, while difficult, should not dissuade you from getting the rack.
Tilting the upright bars, or shrinking the carrier from four to two bikes is done by moving cotter pins. The receiver has a screw-in bolt to keep it mounted to the car. Adjusting the wheel wells or hold-down hooks is done using handles that screw in or out.
Once the rack is adjusted for your bike, getting the bikes on and off is quick and simple.
For us, this is exactly the rack we need to carry 3 or four bikes at a time for any distance.

Swagman XC-4 Cross-Country 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver Hitch) Review

(More customer reviews)At our children's urging we recently purchased bicycles for ourselves so that we could take family rides together. Since we are not experienced cyclists, perhaps I am not the best judge of a bike rack; in fact, this is the first bike rack I have ever owned and perhaps that makes me a mite too critical.
That being said, however, on the whole, I am very pleased with this rack. It holds our four bikes extremely securely, including my women's frame bike (one of the reasons we decided to go with a platform-style bike rack, like this one). The bikes, when firmly fastened, don't budge at all. I like the fact that the bike rack tilts upward, away from the road, which gives us an added sense of security when driving over bumps. I like the fact that the arms ratchet down, rather than screw down, as a competitive rack does, as I find that we are often securing and then releasing the arms to better the position the bikes. Screwing and unscrewing would drive me up the wall. Plus, the ratcheting allows us to get a really snug fit. My husband always gives each arm one last little shove before we take off and the ratcheting feature ensures an incredibly tight fit.
On the downside, we still find getting the bikes on the rack a hassle. We bought the platform-style bike rack because we thought, based on various reviews, that it would be easier to load than a hanging rack -- and perhaps it is. Again here our inexperience shows. Using this bike rack, however, is still like fitting together a puzzle. Even though we've figured out which bikes fit best in which position and we've gotten the tire loops set just right, it's still a challenge. Invariably, the pedals are oriented wrong and getting in the way of installing the next bike, or rubbing against the ratchet arm, or one bike's seat doesn't slide under the other's handlebars exactly as it seemed to the last time we loaded the rack. It can be very frustrating, especially at the end of an exhausting and sweaty ride. (I would note from experience that it's best to stagger the tire loops as dramatically to the left and right as possible to make the loading as easy as possible.)
Also on the downside is the weight of the rack. We store ours in a walk-out basement and it's all my husband can do to get the thing out and up the little hill to our driveway. I definitely could not install the rack myself.
Some additional points: The rack I received was a newer model than the one in the picture. This created a few issues. For one, the assembly instructions which came with our rack was from the older model and completely useless. Moreover, we couldn't even look at the picture on the box for guidance because the picture was of the older model. Assembly was extremely frustrating. Also, if you are looking for a locking hitch pin, note that this rack (at least the newer model which we received) can not use a standard locking hitch pin; it requires a specialized threaded locking hitch pin which only Swagman seems to make.
And finally, the rack we received contained parts in which the powder coating had chipped off and the rack began rusting immediately. We contacted Swagman about this problem. The company representatives we've spoken to so far have been friendly and more than willing to exchange the parts, but even that experience has been frustrating. No one I've dealt with at the company calls back when they say they will, or responds to email, and then when I finally received a box of parts, only one of the three damaged parts was actually in it. I've been promised the remaining parts and expect I will receive them, but this has been a ridiculous hassle. I'm never impressed with poor, unprofessional customer service.

It is the easiest bike rack I have ever used. The bikes are very sturdy in transport. While the fold down feature is very easy and convenient to use, I find that without the bikes on the car if I keep the inside knob off and stored in the car, I can still open the trunk without using the fold down feature. Great for both ladies and mens frames. Fantastic product. Highly recommend. Not too difficult to assemble either.

(More customer reviews)Looked at several racks before finding the perfect one. We haul 4 "hybrid" bikes around. None have the traditional cross bar. The Hollywood Sport Rider supports the bikes by the tires/wheels. It weighs a bit, but if you fold it up, it balances nicely and can be put into the receiver easily. Also, it has a device to tighten it up once in the receiver, so it (and the bikes) do not wobble AT ALL as you cruise down the bumpy side roads. As with most anything in life, you get what you pay for with this awesome rack. Hope this helps.

(More customer reviews)I needed a 5 bicycle rack that could handle all our family bikes, including our 3 children's (5, 7 and 10 yrs. old) for our yearly vacation. This one seemed to be pretty versatile, not requiring additional bars for most bikes.
While it took some work to make all bikes fit just right (especially the little ones), we made the 4 hour trip to the mountains just fine; no excessive movement (though it does sway a little), no damage to the bicycles (I used pipe insulating foam tube pieces in a couple of spots where bikes rubbed each other) and an overall uneventful trip, even on some not-so-smooth roads. Getting the kids' bikes on was kinda tricky (the littlest one had to travel upside down!) but it worked out fine--I don't think it would have been so with some of the other 2-bar models.
However, if I had to load all 5 bikes on a regular basis I'd probably be looking for a different option. Also, something this rack (and most others too) could use is some kind of reflective finish on the end of the tube... can never be too safe!

(More customer reviews)Just got back from a 1600 mile road trip with 5 bikes in the rack hanging out the hitch of my wife's XC90. My bike is the only one of the five that fit perfect, two of the bikes were my wife's and my daughter's and two were my sons' all of which did not have a cross bar to sit over the rack's two bars in a "pretty" manner. With some patience and wiggling all five bikes fit and were strapped snug over the rack. It held really well even through the hills and mountains of northern Georgia. The bikes come off easily and we were able to unload. The only problem is that if the rack is fully loaded with five bikes you better have a good reason to get into the back of your SUV because it takes three people to gently let the rack down and to put it back up.

We have one man's and one woman's comfort bikes and the different length center main clamps of the rack are perfectly suited to these differences in bike design. The rack is very easy to insert and lock into our trailer hitch and the bikes are extremely easy to load requiring only a minimal lift and support to set and lock them into the rack. Definitely truth in advertising!

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Allen Deluxe 5-bike rack in November 2009. I spent about 15 hours researching bike racks on the Internet and at several retail outlets. I settled on the Allen after comparing features and value between five of the major competitors. I mounted the rack to a 2009 Honda Odyssey. I've used the hitch to carry two adult and two kids bikes for several local trips and one 200+ mile trip. The bikes loaded easily (even the bike used by my 4 year old). The couplings swivel, allowing small bikes to attach with out a crossbar. I added a few bungee cords for my own peace of mind on the longer trip and to reduce sway. The only flaw with the product thus far is that I was unable to put the pin back in the hole after I tilted the rack with the bikes attached. The weight of the bikes appeared to put too much downward pressure on the rack causing misalignment of the holes. A longer pin that could be manipulated better or a second person pushing up on the rack may help. The rack was very easy to put together and install and shipping by Amazon was very fast. The rack has already paid for itself in the enjoyment my family has had biking on several great bike trails with family and friends.

About Allen Bike Racks: In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. (More customer reviews)I love this bike rack. The price is very reasonable and its build-quality I consider top-notch with all holes and welds being quite precise. The design has clever features that were new to me, such as being able to fold down the bike support arm when not in use so one doesn't accidentally run into it and also the ability to fold down the whole rack allowing quick and easy access through the rear door. The strap cinching system seemed cheap and goofy at first but after using it a few times I've now become quite adept at strapping and unstrapping the bikes to where it only takes a few seconds for me to do so. I now feel its quite clever in that this strapping system will accommodate any size bike tube (unlike some other bike racks I've had in the past). Its important to note that the spacing between the supports is quite wide at 14" and that might limit its use for smaller bikes, as our adult bikes just barely fit (with
