StowAway Max Cargo Carrier with Swingaway Frame - Black Review

StowAway Max Cargo Carrier with Swingaway Frame - Black

I did a lot of on-line shopping until I decided on this one. I looked at the Rola and Thule as well, and they all looked good, but I got this one because it had the most space (16 cubic feet, as opposed to 13 for the Rola 59109). Turns out, it has other advantages, also.
First, excellent customer service. The StowAway Max is not offered under Amazon Prime, so I went directly to the seller website and they were offering a $40 discount. When I finalized my on-line order, I noticed that the discount hadn't been applied, so I wrote them an email. Immediately (within hours) I got a reply saying that they would apply the credit to the credit card ASAP. About a minute later I got a confirmation, so I knew they were serious.
Next, they shipped the next day, and I got it in about three days. The packaging was pretty flimsy, but it all came intact (in 2 boxes). The installation instructions were pretty simple, and all the parts were included. It helps to have a nice socket wrench set or a pair of large crescent wrenches. None of the parts are very heavy and even a light weight guy like me can do it by himself. The hitch tightener is included, and the "Plus" package (which was offered free) also includes a hitch lock. The swingaway arm was sturdy and had no movement play at all once everything was tightened. The hinge point is a large bolt, and the nut is a little hard to screw on, and to do it right you need a large wrench (I had to use a pipe wrench for torque because I am not that strong). The cantelever turns out to be very strong, and I could lean my entire weight on it without tilting at all. The instructions say you don't have to install the hitch tightener until later, but I would recommend doing it before you put the box on the frame, as access to it is much easier with the box out of the way, and once the box is on, the frame is much heavier and harder to control the wobble when tightening the nuts.
The frame is versatile, and you can take the box off and put on a bike rack or other accessories. There are three separate ways to secure the swing arm: spring latch, a hand-tighten bolt, and a hinge pin. A bit redundant, but probably a good idea, especially on rough roads.
The box is typical plastic and solid but much thicker than the Yakima Rocket rooftop box on my other car. The lid seems like it would be rain proof, but there is no gasket along the edge. Just a lip-in-groove design. There is a large hole in the corner and a rubber plug to make cleaning easy. You can just hose it out. The lid is heavy, but when it is open all the way, it "clicks" into place to hold it up. Very nice, especially when you need both hands to pack the box. You have pull the lid down with a bit of force to overcome the click and close it, but I think it is okay. The lid has a lock, but the key can be removed when it is locked or unlocked. I would have preferred the design where the key is only removable when the handle is in the locked position, so that you don't accidentally leave the lid open.
The wiring was simple, "plug and play". I installed the license frame easily and the light works well. You do have to drill some holes, so you will need a drill. One warning is that if you have a lift-hatch on the back of your SUV, you have to find just the right position of the box when you swing it out or the the hatch may hit the box as it opens up.
Overall, this product exceeded my expectations, and I'm sure the Rola would have been good too. I didn't like the Thule because of the deep lid which would have made packing high a little difficult. The Rola has a pod that attaches to the pad, but I'm not sure what the benefit of that would be, other than you can carry the pod right into your camp rather than unpacking it. The fact the StowAway Max holds 3 more cubic feet than the Rola was the final selling point for me. It was more expensive, but I have no regrets, considering that all the necessary accessories were included.

Curt Manufacturing 56106 T-Connector Review

Installed this on my 2011 Sienna Van. Very easy install except for running the power cable to the battery. I came along the inside floor molding and out the driver side door seal into the hood through the fender. Plug and play except for that. works great. Tested it out yesterday. The curt hitch is awesome too, very easy install and the frame of the hitch is not as conspicuous as others.

Reese Towpower 51033 Class III Hitch Receiver Review

Reese Towpower 51033 Class III Hitch Receiver

I bought this for my 2003 Ford Sport Trac 2 wheel drive expecting an easy, no problem install based on the description. Not the case by a long shot. No drilling is required, but the receiver will not mount at all without using a torch and cutting the lower portion of the bumper bracket to allow the receiver to pivot and line up to accept the 2 perpendicular bolts. The description also indicates that a hitch plug cover was to be included. It was not, although Amazon did allow an adjustment to my bill to compensate. All in all, the receiver seems pretty robust, but don't think it will be an easy 10 minute install.

Put this on my 2010 Tundra. Installation was simple (20 minutes) and it has performed perfectly. I use it for moving my small camper around in tight spaces since it is hard to see it behind the truck. No complaints.

Curt Manufacturing 13469 Class III Receiver Review

Curt Manufacturing 13469 Class III Receiver

Curt trailer hitches are shipped in a box that is too large for the hitch with no packing materials at all. The hitch is left to bounce around in the box during shipping. This resulted in one hitch arriving so bent that it was unable to be mounted to the vehicle. The second hitch came scratched up. I opted to keep the hitch that was scratched because I do not feel Curt would have been able to supply me with a defect free product due to their sub-par packaging methods. Remember that you get what you pay for. If you want a great hitch that is priced cheap get this one. But be warned you will likely receive it damaged.
In case you were wondering, the product came in a factory sealed box with Curt on it so it was not packaged poorly by a third party.

Curt Manufacturing 11386 Class I Receiver Review

Wow, this is a beefy hitch! I ordered this and the Swagman XTC Cross-Country 2-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (1.25 and 2-Inch Receiver) and a few days later I had a large box and a small box on my doorstep. The large box was HEAVY and I thought for sure it was my bike rack. Nope! The bike rack was neatly folded in the small box and my Curt Class I Receiver was in the large box. I'm not making a big deal about the weight, just consider yourself warned when you try to install this puppy.
The instructions are a simple 1-sided job, and look more like an engineering schematic than helpful directions, so allow me to share my experience. I was installing this on my 2009 Mazda 3 sedan. To do so, you first have to enlarge four holes on the box frame underneath your trunk. You could do this with a hole ream, a step drill, or a 1/2" drill bit. I chose the last option. Make sure to use a metal bit with some cutting oil, and definitely wear safety googles. Nothing sucks worse than getting a hot metal shaving in your eye! Next, you use this cool little fishing wire to pull the bolt and bracket through the frame and into the hole. The best way to do this: take the coiled pigtail end and fish it through one of your enlarged holes. Then grab it where it exits the frame (make sure to leave a little wire hanging out of the hole!). Push the pigtail through the metal bracket and then thread the bolt into the pigtail coil. Slowly pull the wire from the enlarged hole end and the bolt should pop through the hole. You have to pull slowly or else you might pull the wire off the bolt and then you have to try and fish the bolt and bracket out of your box frame. I used a long screw driver to kinda help the bolt/bracket along the frame cause it felt like it was catching on something. I only recommend threading through the bottom two bolts. Gravity will kinda hold them in place. The two side bolts will fall back into the frame very easily if you're not watching what you're doing and you bump them will lifting the hitch into place.
Remember how heavy I said the hitch was? You'll be laying on your back trying to lift this beast into place, making sure not to push your bolts back into the frame all while making sure you don't drop the hitch on your face. Quickly thread the nuts on the two center bolts, tighten finger tight, then fish the side bolts through and tighten the nuts down on them.
I had a hard time getting any of my sockets up between the hitch and frame to tighten the nuts down to 50 ft-lbs. It was very slow going and probably the part that took the longest. I probably should've used my air ratchet, but I didn't want to over-torque the bolts.
All in all, very nice hitch. Great finish and I'm sure it will last a very long time. Instructions could've been better, but take your time and you should have no problems installing. Also, there's a video on the eTrailer website and YouTube showing how to install this on a Mazda 3. Watch those first.

River's Edge Receiver Hitch Cover Chrome Propeller Review

River's Edge Receiver Hitch Cover Chrome Propeller

I knew it was too good to be true, there's no "New ball bearing spinner"! This is the same cheap plastic quality as the last similar one that I previously ordered (3-blade) which recently broke. The 3-blade one cost about $8 more but I think the simpler design was worth it. The 3-blade one also had a tight-fitting pop-off spinner retainer that allows the blade to pop off in the rear direction when hit hard (but not fwd unfortunately). This 4-blade product has a plastic nut that will probably keep the prop on when bumped, forcing a blade to break when pushed too hard aftward. I don't so much mind that they're both plastic, seems like a good idea so that they just break the blade if bumped too hard, but I really wanted metal in the friction-joint, like ball bearings or bushings. This River's Edge 4-blade prop has false-advertising (at least at Amazon, the product package said nothing about bearings), no ball bearings at all.
